Biglal Haneiros Hallolu - Shlomo Carlebach
Every question you ever ask is the Gemara's question: Mai Chanukah?
Lulay soiroscha into Haneiros Hallolu TTTO B'shem Hashem followed by Biglal Avos. This is to say: When the Torah (Haneiros Hallolu) is studied without the Nosein Hatorah in mind, at least zchus avoseinu toshia. Or something.

Lima'an - JEP
Shmuel,
This is what Helfgott sang on Motzsh"k. I don't remember whose it is, and the JEP version is certainly a different experience, but it is a very nice shtickel.
Oh, also: "Mizmor shir Chanukas Habayis," so, Chanukah.

Rozo d'Shabbos - Michoel Streicher
The redeeming thing is that when typing "Stre..." into the TAGS box, it brought up, להבדיל, Streisand. The other thing is that it's actually a gorgeous song, once rerecorded by Shlomo Simcha, but with a t'nuah that is more better in this version.

This is a recording called "Precise Melodies of the Chabad Rebbes. I don't know the where or what of its origins." It has some very beautiful and very un-ungepatchket violin and clarinet type stuff, backed by lagging and annoying keyboard bass chords.

We Are One - MBD - We Are One
The superstars...[pause for light giggling]...of Jewish music...[pause for uneasy coughing]...banded together recently...[pause to reflect on the possible difficulty]...in an unprecendented show of unity...[that's nice]...to lobby for the release of Sholom Mordechai Halevi Rubashkin...[now, now, now!].
Now: I don't like that song, so listen to this one instead.
As it is written on the Marvelous Middos Machine and explained in the Pirush Aish Someach:
Sholom needs peace,
A final release,
From Rodfei Sholom who called the police,
He always is quick to forget and forgive
And that's how Hashem wants us to live...

Moses - Aaron Razel
Moses: Head Jew, 2368-2488.
Additional relevant info: The words are from the Gemoro describing where Moshe isn't buried.
Why was Moshe's burial-place hidden from human discovery? Because Hashem knew well that the Beis Hamikdash was to be destroyed and the Jewish people exiled from their land... Lest they pass by Moshe's grave at that terrible moment and stand with tears flowing, begging Moshe, praying, saying: Moshe Rabbeinu! Stand up in prayer for us! And Moshe would stand up and successfully eradicate the decree.
The הגהות הב"ח concludes: From here we see that a Tzaddik is more cherished (i.e., listened to by Hashem) after his passing than even during his life.
Shwekey.

Amen!

Ani Shabbos - MBD - Moshiach
WOW! I've never known the background to this song.
The story in very short: Once, while sleeping, R' Avrohom ibn Ezra was visited by an angel who handed him a letter. It was from Shabbos, and it said...
(My possibly inaccurate translation: Hey! I'm Shabbos, the treasured crown of a cherished people, fourth of the Ten Commandments,
And between Hashem and His children, I am a sign, an everlasting covenant, for every generation...)
And since I haven't finished reading or processing, this is where it may be read and processed. Good Shabbos!
UPDATE: Ooops! Per the comments, I uploaded the Ani Maamin off that recording instead of the Ani shabbos.

Beit Hamikdash - Tuvia Bolton
It's been a few posts since I needed to post a track, so here's a track I really needa post.
Every single element of this song rocks: the reggae-over-gospel groove; the simply-spoken lyrics; the kazoo (prompted by "play-that-thing"); and the endless parade of spectacular interludes at the end (afterlude is not a word and postlude is just unpretty. Which is not a word).
Whoooaaaaa, it will really be Sababa!
Much, much better than Olam Habba, aaaaah,
Yeeeahhhhh! The whole world will be biseider!
Can there be anything grea-ter,
Than to rejoice with our Cre-a-ta-a-a-a!?

Gate of Return/Rhythm Messiahs - Diaspora Yeshiva Band
It gets a little Pink Floydy at 1:30, and then, so very randomly, all Ozzy O at 3:35 or so (in his post-Sabbath yohren). My, my. I sound as if I knew him in his Sabbath yohren! Which sounds as if I knew him. Which I didn't. Wish I did.
GATE OF RETURN
On the topic of elevators, I entered one this morning. One of the maintenance fellas was in there with a pail and Pinesol, washing the place down. And I thought "There is a lesson for my life in this scene of an elevator going up and down, stopping and starting, filling and emptying and all along, Alberto is inside working." I don't know what the lesson is, though.
Man, I can use another song!

The Return - Avraham Fried
To apologize for the past without pledging to change is just another, more sinister form of wrong. To return, a changed person, without apologizing for the past is at worst an unfinished journey. This is why the ערי מקלט, though open to everybody, were only built inside Eretz Yisroel: it is one thing to live a life of חוץ if, when the time is ripe to run, you run to Eretz Yisroel. It is quite another thing to "return" to the same barren desert.

T'ka B'shofar Gadol - Yossele Rosenblatt
Do I have a sufficient number of T'ka B'shofar Gedolim to post one every day of Elul? You tell me. Do I? Of course I do. Why would I even answer? Why would you ask? Do you want to know? Are you asking? So ask! What, do I have enough, you want to know? Good question. Let's just say, yes, I probably do.
The challenge is in only posting enjoyable ones.
Hashem is so kind, he'll forgive you, with t'shuvah that comes from the heart. (Ha, maybe tomorrow that will post!)

Ha'aleinu/L'artzeinu - Yosef Karduner - Mikdash Melech
Do you recognize the lyrics to "Ha'aleinu"? I don't. But it mellows along a beautiful thought that seems to be "Bring us up to Eretz Yisroel in order to make us worthy of its holiness." Which reminds me of the "vikuach" "bein knesses Yisroel viHakadosh Boruch Hu." ("Knesses Yisroel omeres: Hashiveinu vinashuva, vHakadosh Boruch Hu Omer: Shuvu Eilai viAshuva aleichem." Yochid v'Rabim, halacha k'Rabim.) Maybe I'm disunderstanding the words. The next song is the next track on the same trail and it works very well as such.

Hashem S'fatai Tiftach! - Yosef Karduner - Mikdash Melech
National Week of Karduner? Maybe... What an awesome guitar-pickly-and-trumpet intro! Also a subtly spectacular bass riff throughout. Finally, the "Anu amecha" bit at the end. What a great, great, great vibe!
BeeTeeDub: total accident that my heart stopped on two Karduneskies in a row, and from the same album. He's just that good.
I know it's not a good idea, but I had the mental image of this song being the background to a "JK Wedding Dance" style thing. If you work in my office and would like to try it down our runway, let me know the time and place and we'll subwoof the hell outta this thing!

Ashreinu - Even Sh'siyah
The "classic" Ashreinu with a kick. Also, I once promised to feed Even Sh'siyah to you all piece by piece by piece...
...and there will be NO peace until...
Ooh! Ooh! So, I'm sitting on my parkway--wait, did he say "my" parkway?--my parkway, and Charlie walks by and it is Erev Shabbos and Charlie stops and gives a long and heavy krechtz. "Niiiiine shalom zochors tonight," he says. "Can't do it anymore. I just can't do it anymore."
It occurs to me that I know very little of Charlie's biography, so I ask him. "Charlie, how old are you?" And he says "I've been 69 for the past 35 years."
I sense the conversation slipping (as if it was a conversation and I once had a grip on it) and I feel the need to get more information, more details, more color so I say "But really..." and he continues "My father brought me here the year the Rebbe became Rebbe."
I did not know that.

- Arik Einstein/Josie Katz

Devil Went Down to Georgia - Charlie Daniels
This is the clearest and most recent version I've seen, and "Johnny's" solo, as frenetic as it is--in the words of veteran critic Ber--is also the most energetic. Good stuff.

Shma Yisroel - Yaakov Shmekey
Today, I listened to the words of this song for the first time and found them to be actually chilling. FML
Omar R' Akiva - MBD - Kulam Ahuvim
Apropos of the week before Lag b'Omer.
I've always liked the idea that:
מה מקוה מטהר את הטמאים, אף הקדוש ברוך הוא מטהר את ישראל.
Beyond the analogy, consider that the tahara of mikva is by and for הקב"ה. In effect, Just as a mikva is one way that Hashem can "purify" someone, He may also choose to purify ישראל Himself.
Jump into His mikva, baby!

Shabbos Koidesh - Avraham Fried - Yiddish Gems I
It wouldn't hurt him to re-record this, but the point remains:
Good Shabbos!

National Day of Mimkomcha 2010
ממקומך מלכינו תופיע – From Your place, our King, reveal Yourself and reign over us, for we wait for You. When will You reign in Zion? Let it be soon in our days, [and may it last] forever and ever. May You dwell and be exalted and hallowed within Jerusalem Your city for all generations and to all eternity. May our eyes behold Your kingship as it is said in the songs to Your majesty by David, Your righteous anointed: ימלך ה' לעולם, אלקיך ציון לדור ודור, הללו'ה!

Wavin' Flag - Young Canadian Artists for Haiti.
The idea is to take Young Canadian Artists and donate them to Haiti. A secondary objective is to understand how > my getting older > might make me stronger > making me "Freedom" > just like a Wavin' Flag. (Then it goes back! Very mysterious.)
If you like choruses, love collaborative anthems and adore execution that is fun and not incredibly self-righteous, like this. It is not We Are the World - 25, because it is fun and not incredibly self-righteous.
There is a video, à la We Are the World, which can be found on Youtube, but because of your lame efforts to help, I cannot be found on Youtube. Lament, lament Children of Zion; rend your clothes in mourning. Lift your arms in prayer, let your eyes rain tears, beseech the Heavens that they may comfort you, firebomb Ber's desk. - Me in my Book

Taamu Ureu - Verdict?
Is it time yet for a verdict on Ta'amu? Is it a "Hit"?
Personally, I'm filing it under easy listening.
Thoughts?

Which is to say: I must have forgotten to post it yesterday and last week and a month ago and before two years, but all is not lost.

Adir Ayom - Yosef Karduner
"Ha-a-she-em eh-h-ye oy-zech, eh-ye oy-zech lee..."
I've always believed that MBD had Yeedle sing first verses on some songs so that when he cut in, the song would sound so many bajillions of times more better than if it was just a bajillion times very good to begin with. See also, Karduner, Adir Ayom, 1:01. (Except this Yeedle has a charm all his own.)
