At the end of this great shabbos video, is this song.

Shabbat Shalom.

"Landsmen!!!" • The Frisco Kid

The final possuk in today's Shir Shel Yom always reminds me of this movie: "Vayacheele-e-ehu mechelev chee-taaaaaw...umitzooor, dvash asbee-e-e-ekaaaaw..." But I can't find that particular clip :)

Shabbos kumt!

Y-ah Ribon • Aaron Razel / Shir Tzion

Three things to hear:
  • The final syllable of each stanza is the first of the refrain "...lihachavaYAH ribon olam..."
  • "Ovad GIvurteich vitimhaya.." is an identical tenuah to minute 1:37 of Arturo Marquez's Danzon No. 2, conducted exquisitely ad lev hashamayim here by our hero Gustova Dudamel, who deserves an annual mention.
  • The sound of Shabbos!!!

Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh • MBD / Ein Od Milvado

In Hilchos Kedusha (Orech Chaim, 125:3), the Alter Rebbe quotes this entire passage as a "smach" for the custom to lift our feet during the words "Kadosh", "Boruch" and "Yimloch". So, of course, it took us eight times longer than usual to get through the se'if.

    Jews of Silence • Tzlil V'zemer 3

This post could be any of a half-dozen songs relevant to today. But it will be something that our Shliach Tzibbur was humming while wrapping up his Tallis. It is relevant in some sense to the just-passed Chanukah holiday, the present Hey Teves celebration and the court hearing that is happening today to stop the pending ban on traditional Bris Mila. "Is that really the plan?" you ask. "To ban Bris Mila?" Let's not find out. Let's not be silent, so we'll never be silenced.

    Ko Echsof • Yehuda Green

Thank you, people who watch, listen and smile, and thank you for telling me about it every now and then. Here's Yehuda Green, Chassidishe neshama, singing Koh Echsof. It is either his own heart-stopping composition, or I am missing an obvious link...

Why today? Because it's an addictive song that I don't deserve to be hooked on alone. But also because today is Wednesday. On Wednesday we recite the verses "Lechu Niranina" in Shir Shel Yom.

The Frierdiker Lubavitcher Rebbe teaches: An explanation of the three verses beginning l'chu n'ran'na, in a manner meaningful to everyone, is as follows: Wednesday, we begin thinking: What will we have for Shabbat? This is a concern in the literal sense and also spiritually, "how can we Shabbos" (i.e. make a real Shabbat)? After all, every person is quite different on Shabbat than on a weekday. So we become a bit despondent. The solution is l'chu n'ran'na ("Come let us sing"), have faith, trust. Comes Thursday, it is now closer to Shabbat and we still have nothing. It doesn't seem to "n'ran'na" so easily and we realize we must do something. So we study Chassidus Thursday night, so that by Friday we sense the depth of "...for the L-rd is a great G-d and a great King1..."; and with this a Jew "can Shabbos." Original Yiddish.

Bidrachim rabot halachti... Chassidus views the command to Avram, "Lech Lecha", as a command to the holy Neshama to descend from Essential Truth into the highest truth of a physical existence. And also as the ascent from the world of Terach into the highest physical truth. And when we do both, bringing our neshamos into this bodily world and raising our feet to dance higher, higher, higher, the whole shebang gets lifted.

The Chassidic Masters explain: Noach was instructed to board his boat and board it up,rejecting everything that threatened his values. This is what we do all of our lives; we close the door and study; we close the door and pray; we close the door and shut out what does not belong inside our inner inner sanctum.

Then, Noach was instructed to leave the Ark. Not only that he may now stop hiding from the world, but that he must now run into it... him, his wife and his two sons with them; bring out the animals two-by-two and seven-by-seven; let them roam and run free and spread the news of an ark that saves.

Ani Lo Misugal • Yehuda Glantz

It's taken me all day because there are very many tracks on this recording that are worth sharing. The main point, though, is that the songs on this album are all re-worked (translated, formatted, melodized) teachings of R' Shlomo Carlebach. Which are, in turn, teachings of Judaism with the particular influence of Chassidus.

Exhibit A: One who tells Hashem "Leave me alone. You don't have to watch me constantly." Hashem says: "Biseder gamur, have a nice day!" [As for me:] oy, Aibishter, I can't do this without you.

    Nafshenu Katzipor • Aaron Razel

Peretz commented on the non-flow of yesterday's post. It is a family thing.

As I recall, Aaron Razel used to jam on Motza'ei Shabbos in random homes and shuls in Tzfas, 1999. He released a recording that year called "Hasneh bo'er"—the Bush is Burning. It was musically original as an acoustic, Jewish, solo-artist, non-Aderet-distributed act. I think it was also lyrically and conceptually original for its reliance on  story/message scripture in addition to the prayer/praise scripture. Examples are "Tzei min hateiva" "Ha'sneh bo'er" "Hayinu kicholmim."

More recently, Aaron composed "Lev Echad" for Yeedle and "B'inyan hasimcha" for MBD, both "alternative" in music and concept relative to "typical" Super Star Singer Stuff, but always eidel, Jewish and good.

    Tuesday, August 14, 2012

    Katonti • Yonatan Razel

Sruly M. emailed this new mellow and melodic track last night.

My first thoughts: Excellent background listen. Potentially excellent period.

As both Razel brothers have separately proven to be thoughtful composers—inspired by and inspiring to the Chassidic soul of life—I am fine with "reading into" this whole thing like a three-part niggun.

The low part is simple and structured, almost simple enough to be any low part on any slow song of any "Smashing New Superstar Singer", but with a few note-twists that remind me of JEP (hear 1:05).

Often, a slow start from a proven musician is a sign of a great punchline to come. Indeed, besides for the fact that the composer called this song "Katonti", I think it is about "Hatzileni Na." These words are where the emotion and prayer come in. As if to say "it's true that I feel meritless; and it's true that I may be meritful; but Save me on Your terms, G-d!"

Following the prayer is the self-assurance, "Ki chasdecha gadol"—You have saved me before and You will hold me again. Orchestra, gospel, understated but very full.

    Your thoughts?
