Vi Dein Yid? • Lipa Schmeltzer

Well, it's certainly catchy!

This song is called "Vi dan boord?" ("Where's your beard?"). It quotes Pirkei Avos: Do not stare at the pitcher but what is inside it; a new pitcher can hold old wine; an amateur can have deep skills. In this song, the reflection asks equally: Yid, where's your beard? And beard, where's your Yid?

Here is the background story from a Satmar blogger:

The story is about R' Elimelech Tress... quoting from a wb site: "The Satmar Rebbe, Reb Yoel Tietelbaum, treated Mike Tress with a great deal of Kovod (respect). One of his chassidim was surprised at this and asked the Rebbe how he could do this? Mike was just a clean shaven guy! The rebbe replied in Yiddish (but I will write his reply in English). “In the World to Come when Mike Tress gets there they will ask him, “Yid, Yid where is your beard? When you get there, they will ask beard, beard, where is your Yid!”"

And here is the Satmar bloggers own thoughts:

So that's a beautiful story about a wonderful Yid, who in his time, having a beard wasn't the norm in the US. But how does that compare to a chasidishe yid who decides who doesnt want to be chasidish anymore and starts shaving - it's not the same thing at all. But I do get the underlying message of 'dont judge a book by its cover- ' look at the neturi karta, and the lev tahor ppl, and pedophiles with long beards... a beard means nothing.

Others are really mad at Lipa for taking the words of the holy Reb Yolish Zt"l and turning it into a pop song, and for seemingly using the rebbe's words to justify their own actions.

As Paul Harvey said: "Now, you know the rest of the story"

Thank you for this!

I heard a parable in the name of our Rebbe:

There are some foods that are bad for a person--potato peels for example--yet if someone generally healthy ingests them, no major consequences need be expected.

But if someone with a sensitive stomach eats that same junk, it can wreak havoc on his system.

Some actions, such as shaving a beard, are not properly healthy actions for a Jew. Yet if a generally observant and healthy Jew shaves, it is not a terrible thing.

But if a person has been exposed to the Toras Habaal Shem Tov—a soul sensitive to the effect of each connection—attempts the same action, dire consequences will result!

this song could also be scalled "2 wrongs make a right"
