The Lonero Family - Destiny
See, at our Shabbos table we would actually all sing "La la la la la laiiii... la la la la la la laiiii..." And my sister still picks up the phone when I call: "Is that you my brooother?" And I sadly say, "Oh yes, it is I."
Oh my GODDDD, memories! Memories, my good people.
Happy two-thousand-and-ten! See you on the flip :)

You know Dov Levine?
He's gotta a pretty randomly pleasant voice, too.
There will be no song to prove it. Just what it is, is what it is and it is an exercise in trust.

TED Performance - Gustavo Dudamel
Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, 2nd movement.
Then Arturo Márquez' Danzón No. 2. You will remember this from the time previous, and it is as stunning but more so. It is longer and softer at the long and soft spots (11:10) and harsher and crisper at the crispy harsh parts. And more fun where there is more fun being had.
(But I'm also kinda tired of this particular piece. Nu. Nu. Nu. L'artzei. Nu.)

Yngwie Malmsteen with the New Japan Philharmonic - Icarus Dream Fanfare
Long story short, read wiki-p about the man. So, he played one of the pieces off of his "Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E flat minor"—a set written by him, scored by a friend (Rosenthal, a Jew), conducted by a different friend (Levi, a Jew), and performed by the Czech Philharmonic (once full of Jews)—with the New Japan Philharmonic. And that is this.
UPDATE: Peretz noted in the comments that I posted the "wrong" clip. So here is the "correct" one. Special Moments: "Violin" at :37 and teeth-playing at 7:00.

Shlomo Carlebach,
A song that can possibly be considered an overarching tribute. (Possibly not, but that's why you don't get to choose.) Gut Shabbos, Gut voch! Gut voch, Gut Shabbos! I wish you the best!
And a song I love, love, love.
Both from the Carlebach in Jerusalem recording.

MBD/Aron Razel - Inyan Hasimcha
Like this: We will first take stock of the current state of Jewish music and decide if it is Jewish. We will then take stock of the current state of Jewish music and decide if it is music. We will then take stock of the current incarnation of the King of Jewish Music and decide if... you see what we are going to do, yes?
OK: Aron Razel has a weird way of inserting the laughies and the shouties without sounding disingenuous—which is to say, while retaining his, and its, genuineness. That's huge, especially in a borderline psychotic and altogether bad-advice song like this. I mean, I have been outside that circle, and a good pair of balls can be easily crushed when the Inside Guy follows this advice. But it's also SUCH a great—and really the only—way I can imagine putting these words to a tune. I hate it. I love it. I need to listen again.
UPDATE: I lied. And I hate it.
I don't hate it, of course, but having not heard it for several hours, my annoyances are: MBD's rough איש אחד מבחוץ at :26 and his general hav'ara mizrachi... this is, like, classic Rabbi Nachman! A bissel chassidishkeit? It takes me back to one of my PETTTT peeves: people who get excited by the spiritualness of Eastern religions--things like washing before bread and shaking a palm branch. Honk if you followed that thought. Beep.
Also, re my earlier comment: I didn't understand the whole passage at first. It is not advice to someone to be Chotef ish echod mibachutz, but to examine the way one might be Chotef someone from the side during his own dance, and translate it to yourself. Which is what I was saying though: I wouldn't do that cuz I would kill the person who did it to me. Maim. I'd maim the person who did it to me. Hurt him pretty badly. Glare at him.

Your Favorite Shabbos Songs
I'm trying to put together a collection of Shabbos songs that can be used for Shabbos davening in a Ashkenaz Shul. Please mention or post links to your favorite pieces starting from Friday Night L'Cho Dodi to Shabbos Mussaf. All genres are welcome, but really I'm looking for Chazzonus and traditional, with a little Carlebach mixed in (cause who doesn't love Carlebach!).
Thanks in advance!
Off the top of my head:
Rozo D'shabbos - Pinchik
Yishtabach - Yossele
U'vedivrei -
U'venucho - Yossele
Avinu Shebashamayim -
Modim
Retzeh
Ad Haina
Moshe V'Aharon - Carlebach
What would you add/take away?
Thanks in advance!

Eleanor Rigby - Ray Charles
Why? Simple: I logged onto Facebook > It asked "What's On Your Mind?" > I thought "Georgia on My Mind" > I decided to Youtube Ray singing that > Found him singing it with Willie Nelson > Decided Willie Nelson killed it > Looked for Ray singing it > Found him singing Let It Be > Didn't let it > Found him singing Eleanor Rigby > Let it be.

Lev Tahor - Deaf Man in the Shteeble
Moving song and especially chilling in this rendition. And it's music-free so it's kosher.
Which reminded me of their a capella "In a vinkele," which is in my opinion a better version than the original D'Veykus recording... but since Shmekey re-re-re-recorded In a Vinkele in a shtinkele way, we shall go back to basics...
...before presenting Lev Tahor's. (Which is technically an extension of D'Veykus's anyway considering the lead vocals are Rivi Schwebel's. DORKY dorky English narration.)

Haftorah - Midnight Minyan
OH my G-d!!! What a fantasticly brilliant piece! Enjoy.
HT: DeePee.
One may click through to the actual iMeem page to listen to this piece in its brilliant entirety, provided one washes one's hands before clicking, and follows the click with the blessing "...Who has blessed us and required us to perform the clicking of the mouses." One who clicked* his mouse but forgot to say the blessing, may continue listening to the song until the end but should place a sizable donation into a charity envelope and send it to my house. If two people listen to the song together and one of them is tone-deaf, the second one may forcibly prevent his friend** from singing along by mockingly insisting that he is not doing too bad for amateur harmony.***
_______________
*Other versions: Clucked.
**Many authorities maintain that one should re-evaluate friendships with tone-deaf people in the first place. What drew you to them if not music? Seriously, what? Conversation?
***I dunno why. To the whole thmajing.

Di Kedusha Leibt - Mendy Wald
Another beautiful Yiddish song proving how Jewish music can be original and heartfelt without copying secular trends.
I was especially moved by the story chosen for this tune... a sacred servant of G-d going to his death for his beliefs. This is a uniquely Jewish concept.

What's Wrong With Lipa?
Not as much as I once thought. Seems his Lion King parodies float to the top of the pile while he has an extensive discography of actual, um, music. Like in this song, Lipa is a freakintasticly poetic lyricist, mediocrabulous singer and a decencredible arranger. And he's actually realy, really good. Unfortunately, I've already given this what they call "The Avi Treatment" at work and I can no longer bear to listen.
Into your hands I commend my song.

Joseph Schmidt - Ano Avdo
Per the recommendation of Chazzan Netanel (b"r Naftali) Herstik
Josef Schmidt (March 4, 1904 – November 16, 1942) was a tenor and actor. He was born in Davidene (Ukrainian: Davydivka), a small town in the Bukovina province of Austria-Hungary, later Romania and now part of Ukraine.
As a child of musical parents, young Josef was influenced by many cultures. In addition to his native Yiddish, he learned Hebrew and became fluent in Romanian, German, French and English. His first vocal training was as an alto boy in the Czernowitz Synagogue. His talents were quickly recognized and by 1924 he was featured in his first solo recital in Czernowitz singing traditional Jewish songs and arias by Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and Bizet. Soon he moved to Berlin and took piano and singing lessons from Professor Hermann Weissenborn. He returned to Romania for his military service and became cantor of the Czernowitz synagogue.
In 1929 he went back to Berlin, where Cornelis Bronsgeest, a famous Dutch baritone, engaged him for a radio broadcast as Vasco da Gama in Meyerbeer's L'Africaine. This was the beginning of a successful international career. Owing to his diminutive stature (he was just over 1.5 m) a stage career was impossible, however his voice was extremely well suited for radio. He made many records, first for Ultraphone, then for Odeon/Parlophone, was featured in many radio broadcasts and acted in several movies in both German and English.
Ironically, Josef Schmidt enjoyed his greatest successes during the rise of the German Nazis, who subsequently prohibited Jewish artists and writers from working. In 1937, he toured the United States and performed in the Carnegie Hall together with other prominent singers such as Grace Moore. The Nazis banned him from performing in Germany and Austria, but he was still very much welcome in The Netherlands and Belgium, where he was immensely popular.
In 1939, he visited his mother in Czernowitz for the last time. When the war broke out that year he was caught in France by the German invasion. He attempted to escape to the United States but, unfortunately, this failed. Making a dash for the Swiss border, he was interned in a Swiss refugee camp in Gyrenbad near Zurich in October 1942. He had been already in frail health. Harsh camp life and lack of medical care brought about a fatal heart attack on November 16, 1942. He was only 38 years old.
He had a sweet lyric tenor voice with an easy high register, sailing up even to a high D. His warm timbre was perfectly suited for the melodies of Schubert and Lehár. His popular song recordings were the best-sellers of that age.

Lashir - Jo Amar
This is the soundtrack to the Israeli version of Frisco Kid. But there's no such thing. But this song would work great with it if there was. Also the "Lashir" refrain would be an excellent soundtrack to a drama-turned-sad-comedy-by-virtue-of-it-sucking-that-bad camp play with jungle people in underpants.
You know what I mean?
But the emes is, Jo Amar was NOT wrongly billed in HASC as the Sultan of Sephardic Music. Neither was MBD wrongly biled as the undisputed King of Jewish Music. Williger, billed in HASC as having coming off an Amazing and Showstopping Performance, is indisputably Amazing and Showstopping, but not the good kind. Mendy Wald isn't bad, but that's for another different time.

Racheim - MBD & Friends
A reminder. It is written in the holy books that one should listen to "MBD's classic Racheim" twice a week before Mincha. In the merit of being misbonen in the cross harmonies of MBD and Fried introduced at 2:25, one can become ois-tone-deaf and can him or herself learn how to fantastically harmonize.

Shlosha Kesorim - Sheya Rubenstein
Here's a man with a surprisingly pleasant voice for someone with an unbearably irritating voice. Paradoxically speaking.
The short story: A Yossi Green creation (ie, YG created him and composed his stuff). I love this song for Green's way of choosing lyrics that are not only obscure (these aren't necessarily) but that have been sliced-and-diced to extract a serious message that just freakin' WORKS with the tune and the and the and the arrangements and like, vocals. It just WORKS! And then Green injects a bunch of Greenitude into the later part of the song. Which I like.

The Look of a Bad Unterzugger
this conductor is obviously good at what he is doing from the sound of his orchestra but watching him is just so nauseating. He looks like a guy standing trying to unterzug.

Im Eshkacheich - Y-Love + DeScribe
I cant just say this is talented yet(only listened to it twice), but something about the Loi Aleh thing is very addictive.
These guys are part of a quirky group of musicians (Jewish).
UPDATE:(9:46 PM 2.9.09) After repeatedly listening to this song i give it 4 out of 5 stars.(lyrics could use some strength, but the music is great!)

MBD - V'Ha'arev Nah - Double Album II
Arguably up there vocally with "Hold On." Certainly the song that makes me 10 minutes late to work every day. (Most mornings I sing it twice.)

Itzhak Perlman - Greatest Hits
Great violin and very very very fast. Faster than I play + he plays for real. Not sure what the piece is. Noider?

Birkat Hallel - Safam
Safam means mustache. Their emblem was a 1920s 'stache with 1920s glasses. And googly eyes.
Over the years they put out a SMASHING collection of folk/rock/jazz Jewish music (was that ambiguous enough?). We used to listen to them on records... Lots of topical lyrics.
Here's a sampling of their very moving song called Just Another Foreigner: "I met a man in Addis Ababa / his skin was black and his features kind of strange / he showed me a book that he said was the Torah / he spoke of his people, Falasha was their name. / Just another foreigner in another foreign land / but I knew he was my brother as he took me by the hand / singing Au tanastali, Salaam aleikhem. [CHOIR: Aleichem Shalom, Shalom Aleichem!]
Holy CRAP I need that recording!!!!!!!
So this is off the album "Songs for the Jewish Holidays" that I found in the Brooklyn Public Library about 2 years ago. The final four tracks run through Hallel pretty much from beginning to end. This is the brocha and the first paragraph.
Enjoy!

Habein Yakir Li - Tzlil V'Zemer 5
So, this is a Nevuah of Jeremiah Ch. 31. Only I don't think he prophecied "31." It was probably more of an organizational thing later on.
Aaaanyway, turns out this is the same nevuah as "כה אמר ה' מצא חריין במדבר" which is funny if it's funny that two choirs chose lyrics from this perek. It's also the same nevuah as "הנני מביא אותם מארץ צפון" which is not a song so far as I know unless it's a song that I don't know about and it's also the same nevuah as "קול ברמה נשמה" and "רחל מבכה על בניה" and "מני קולך מבכי" which is back to the first funny because the SAME choir chose two songs on one album from the same perek. Which reminds me of about four or five tangentially related items that I have no reason to share here but are alternately funny, sad and obnoxious. Does obnoxious have anything to do with "noxious?" What does noxious mean? Isn't that something that gives off an overpoweringly noxious smell--oops! I just answered my own question! Can anyone guess what book--or which author--I'm in middle of by the number of non-topics I've introduced in this one post?
This is the same nevuah too as "נקבה תסובב גבר" the significance of which I have yet to decide or decipher.
But the song posted is: הבן יקיר לי אפרים אם ילד שעשעים כי מדי דברי בו זכר אזכרנו עוד על כן המו מעי לו רחם ארחמנו נאם ה' Which means something like I love you Jews, says the Lrd.
Cute: The kid at 2:02 is Rocky Ziegler. Do you know who that is? Oh.
The answer is Michael Savage: Psychological Nudity.
UPDATE: Noxious actually means "physically harmful or destructive to living beings." Which probably made me associate the word with smells that are that. But it doesn't MEAN smelly. Obnoxious is something that is "disgustingly objectionable." From the Latin Noxa and not from the Latin "Nexo" or such which had to do with Necro and dead but I closed that page so I'm back dumb.

Waltz Efraim - Mona Rosenblum
It sounds like a classic Bobover niggun or the like but I don't specifically remember hearing it anywhere. Can it be a Mona composition? He's actually quite an underexposed composer and arranger. Very pretty song regardless...

Oidcha - Shlomo Simcha
My dad sang Kol Mekadesh Shevi'i to this. I tend to sing it with Mimkomach on R"H/Y"K. Still looking for the source. If you have it, give it to me. Song posted at the request of and on inspiration from MM.
UPDATE: It is a Modzitzer Niggun to the words "Omar Hashem l'Yaakov (Al Tira Avdi Yaakov)" - L. Purec

Very different then Koussevitzky's Akavya. Anyone have a recording, of them singing each others pieces?

You ever wonder the history behind Moshe Kossueveitzky's Vile'Yerushalyim Ircha? Listen to the song, and then and hear him tell the story himself.
"און עס האט זיך געזונגען" I would like to see some of the modern day Chazzanim pull this off...

Obnoxiously beautiful. Discuss.

Jewish Child - Moshe Yess
YA comes through yet again. Thanks!
UPDATE: By popular request, I'm reposting this song (the original iMeem link is no longer usable). As I remember, YA gave us the studio version; I only have the 1981 Maple Street concert version. If you have the studio version, please email it to me!

PSA: Thank you!
The staff and fans of Shir Shel Yom thank YA for editing and color-correcting the 1981 Megama concert that is now available on YouTube. This represents the best Jewish music renaissance ever. Says I.
If anyone has the track "Jewish Child," please share!

Chukoseha - MBD
Back to basics. Random awesome track off of Moshiach-triangled, arguably MBD's most underrated recording. After Hold-On.
Also, for those sober enough to remember, we sang it for Shalisheedis.

Dudu Fisher
I was always under the impression that Dudu Fisher, can bring the house down at will. I've been going through everything I have from him, and he seems to be holding back in every song...He seems restrained, like he wants to blow it all open, but his trainer warned him against it. This following, are two examples. Elu Devorim (M. Koussevitzky) in its entirety, and the last piece of Tiher Rabbi Yishmoel (Z. Kwartin).

Gutt fune Avrohom
Who doesn't like Gutt fune Avrohom? Not the Entity. I mean Him too, but the prayer! It's a beautiful prayer.
This is that prayer and it's sung to one of the most beautiful tunes. The two issues it has are: 1) the Singer's voice and 2) the general execution/arrangements, '
Anyhoo, ignore the singer's voice. It's Yehuda (not to be confused with Yeduha) and when it isn't forty minutes to Shabbos I'll share my admiration for his overall musical prowess. But it is true that his voice sucks and he Goyifies the most Yiddish of tefillos with his atrocious הברה.
Bichlal, I was thinking that execution is a dying trade, but you can actually make a killing doing it!
