Mishehu Holech Tamid Iti
Avraham Fried - Live in Israel

A cover of Ofra Haza's song and in my opinion a far better attempt at interpreting a beautiful Hebrew song. La'afukei mai? La'afukai kidi'amaran. Gut Shabbos!

Ofra's performance plus transliterated and translated lyrics, here.

Shama Vatismach - Helfgott

Have you heard this Helfgott fellow? A year or so of quiet so he's not over-exposed, and then BAM! This is power!!!

Please excuse the previous post. It seems it's a Kitrug on Nochi. Doesn't happen to any other tracks, pooh, pooh, pooh.

Shalom - Nochi Krohn

Thank you Hashem for Chanukah and for Yud Shvat. Shalom! Here's a bit of Country Yiddem.

Maoz Tzur - London School of Jewish Song

The thing with old-school Jew music--actually, lots of music--is that is is waaaay over-orchestrated. The bass line is dizzying on this track, it's almost playing [bad] lead; the horns between every signature are simply unneeded. Happy Chanukah!

Ko Ribon - MBD - Moshiach³

Good shabbos! "Oyoyoyoy AMEICH! AMEICH! Ameich di vichart mikol umaya..."

Nye Zuritzi - Andy Statman Quartet

This is such incredible and incredibly Jewish music! LOVE! Which is funny, because I have a special place in my heart for disliking klezmer. Oh, but Andy and his Quartet played at a wedding last night, and WOW! What a wedding! Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

There are now 43 tracks in the "Shabbos Label." We are 40 numeric values short of making "שבת" be bigematria "ממש סו דיפ, א געוואלד!" This is the sixth day of the first week of the third month of the year and it is Friday. Good Shabbos Yingelach and Meydullz!

Mekimi - Yosef Karduner

Moe was right.

Just beautiful.

Besides, I asked R' Yosef to play "Banai" from Nochi Krohn (see Nochi Krohn label, right) and he hesitated for second, unsure about which song I was referencing. Then he went "Oh! That was a beautiful song, wasn't it? I've never played it in concert. I don't know how it goes..." Or something. Yeah, Yosef, it really, really was.

Min Hameitzar - Yosef Karduner

Awesome concert/Kumzitz/Farbrengen last night! This was a crowd favorite.

Sunday, November 6, 2011

Kol Zman Shehaneshama Bikirbi - Shlomo Artzi

This is a Belzer Niggun, a Tnuah really, that Shlomo Artzi ends up singing in studio. It looks like a collaborative "jam" of sorts in the late 80s. Whew! Whow!

Hat tip: Deep Awltirack.

Never on Friday - Dudu Fisher

A little bit of Dudu the Broadway performer, Dudu the kindergarten entertainer, Dudu the Chazzan. A lot of fun in every way anyway.

"Ilan / Kad Yasvun / Friday Night Niggun" - MBD

I found myself humming "Kad Yasvun" this morning and considered making it a National Day of Kad Yasvun. But there's only one other that I can think of, so instead, we'll use this opportunity to post a beautiful track from a relatively old recording that may have been conceived in the same brain section as the recent MBD & Shira. From "Once Upon A Niggun". track 6: "Yeshivish"

Yiddish Jems (Hebrew) - Yackov

IIRC Mendy Kaplan from Safed wrote the Hebrew lyrics. Listening to this, I decided that he's a true genius! He translated (almost) every word accurately, i.e. didn't add or remove words to re-write the story, and managed to keep them as a rhyme.

Enjoy.

Im Eshkachech - Ben Asouf

This is what this song would sound like if Shwekey would just finally accept who he is!

Napoleon's March - Chabad Centennial Concert

The other part of the theme song of JEM's Living Torah series... It's pretty solid at full length with full sound.

I remember opining then--and my opinion hasn't changed--that Yisroel Lamm has one grab-bag of arrangements into which he dips at random. He then spreads a generous helping of whatever comes up over a few Miami Experiences, some HASCs and the occasional Chabad Centennial Concert.

Nyet, Nyet from the same concert

Dos Yiddishe Lid

Today I loved the song from the 6:12 mark. I think this song somehow really embodies the concept that from Rosh HaShana through Simchas Torah is really one long Yom Tov, with the Avoda differing for each Yom Tov.

P.S. Please excuse any typos, I typed only with my left hand :)

Niggun Rikkud Chabad - MBD

During the Presidential race between John Kerry and President Bush in 2004, the NYTIMES ran an editorial and pointed out the faults of the Kerry–Edwards logo. Their chief complaint was, that unlike the Bush-Cheny logo, when looking at the Kerry-Edwards logo all you saw was Edwards.

Sorry to say, the visual of this CD cover speaks volumes.

Modeh Ani (x2) - Avraham Fried - Chazak

This morning, speaking of throwback music and thinking of thanksgiving, I remembered Chazak: c. 1999, Tzfas, Israel.

Arguably the best-sold Jewish pop recording, it is unarguably a well-arranged, well-produced CD with TWO songs of thanksgiving. The first and fast Modeh Ani is one of the most fun inter-harmonized songs, as demonstrated at the Ohel 5758 concert with a 12-tiled screen of inter-harmonation. The second is beautiful.

Fast and Fun

Thank You, and thank you, and thank you all.

Who Needs to Sing? - Post 502

The Kotzker Rebbe said that the Jewish people have no fast days:
"Af Yom Kippur, ver darft essen? Un af Tish'a b'Av, ver KEN essen?" (On Yom Kippur, who needs food? And on Tish'a b'Av, who can eat?)

What can I say? What shall we sing? And who needs to hear who doesn't already know? No?

Flowering Jasmine - Gidon Kremer

Allow me to begin from the end: We were listening to the local classical station at 5or 6 AM when this piece came on. We scribbled the name that the DJ said, then Googled it as soon as we got to work. There we all found that we'd all found the same thing: That we'd heard this piece on the local classical station--mine is 105.9--in the very early morning, and felt compelled to Google it and share it.

Here I share "Flowering Jasmine" played on Vibrapahone. Perhaps "Ahh!" misses the feeling, so feel free to comment.

Gut Fune Avrohom - Yehuda Exclamation Point

A prayer recited in many communities at the conclusion of Shabbos, after Havdala. It is a tremendously beuatiful "techina" with a lovely, lovely tune. Sung by Yehuda Exclamation Point which is something of a de riguer downer. I don't know what de riguer means but I believe I used it correctly. If you think I didn't, you probably thought I meant something else.

Because we rarely post after Shabbos and it's weird to post a Bye-Bye Shabbos Lichovos Shabbos, ya know how do I mean?

The Place Where We Belong - Rotenberg, Rotenberg & Tsfat

We heard this first as the Sefer Torah song on Journey's One. Then we heard it as Chasal Siddur Pesach on Lev V'Nefesh One and thought that Abie composed it for that and borrowed it for Journey's One. Then we met the Chezzard in Shul this morning who pointed us to Simply Tsfat An Old Jewish Melody. But, if we're all about the Journey anyway...anyway...

Yesh HKB"H - Adi Ran

One of our favorite Adi Ran songs. B'etzem yesh !!RAK!! Hakoidish bu'chooo... To me, the vort is: A person must go through and experience many aspects of life, yes, even challenges, but not for pain and not forever: Just עד שהוא תופס ש--
יש הקודיש ב'כו
יש הקודיש ב'כו
בעצם יש רק הקודיש ב'כו!

Ashrei Ha'ish - Music of Miri ben Ari (feat. Piamenta)

This is how Sefer Tehillim begins: Ashrei ha'ish asher lo halach b'atzas risha'im, uviderech chata'im lo omad, uvimoshav leitzim lo yashav. Perhaps, colloquially: Lucky is the perceptive listener who would not mistake peer pressure for sound advice. Lucky is the person who does not get lost in the mob of popular opinion. Lucky is the one who can leave a party when there are only poopers left. And good luck to the rest of us. :)

Obviously, the chief excitement here is the Miri ben Fantastic violin! She recorded a Jewish music collection some years ago featuring all the usual suspects plus Gershon Veroba in a parody called The Rabbi Went Down to Georgia. Miri is really fantastic on that track :)

Striking to me as well is the theme of repentance that runs through Rosh Chodesh. Mussaf, tehillim, se'ir izim echod lichatas, and so forth.

As it is written in the Lessons in Tanya: Ritualistic adherence to the supernal endorphines that counterinterrelate amongst the qualitative immersiveness of a ritualarium, can and must exclusively extricate their sins through chibut hakever.

Today is the last "official" day to bless Hashem for not forgetting any details in His rush to, you know, create a world.
