"THE preeminent Jewish boy band today!"
— Ber Boimel, Spotlight on Music
Someone once told me that R' Shlomo Carlebach once noted to or about Avraham Fried "I don't mind if people copy my songs. I just mind if they ruin them." Or something.
I think it was about this song. **Now more ruined than ever!**
Ach, these 9 Days. Are you happy now, Roman conquerors? ARE YOU HAPPY NOW???

I recall one of my friends saying, when AF's first album came out, how now there is someone with a good voice singing Shlomo's compositions (Vehayu Limshisa). Unbeatable combo.
ReplyDeleteYet what intrigued me even more was when Y. Hartman put out a bunch of Nigunim and Shlomo Carlebach sang them. Hmm.
I guess the best of the best is the early Shlomo albums, good voice coupled with beautiful melodies.
Mr. Frum:
ReplyDelete1) I believe No Jew Will Be Left Behind came first.
2) Your friend would probably be thrilled to pieces if Shrekey would put out a Carlebach tape? Afra LePumei!
I stand corrected. VL was not on the first album.
ReplyDeleteIn any event, AF was singing Carlebach Niggunim in that era.
As for my friend, he probably matured enough to appreciate Carlebach singing Carlebach.
Lastly, I like Schwekey. Moreso than AF.
...ducking and running...
I would make a follow-up comment to yours but it's during the nine days. More-than-enough said.
ReplyDeleteit would be nice to listen to a recording of shlomo singing it on his hisoreri album singing it
