I think "butchered" is a little harsh. I can see why you may prefer this version, but MBD's was nice and enjoyable before you heard this so why is it not anymore? - or did you not like it then?
Since I used the term "butchered" and you took issue with it, I'll answer you with an analogy on the topic.
For all the years I ate well done steaks, I enjoyed them. But once I was introduced to rare, or medium (depending on the cut), I came to realize what I was missing in all those well done steaks. They were a total waste of a good piece of meat.

OK, so you're saying that because you discovered later in life that you have a taste for raw meat, that MBD butchered the song.
